Personal Branding for Attorneys
A strong attorney biography helps someone understand who you help and why your background fits the matter. It does that with facts, not promises.
The American Bar Association Model Rule 7.1 says communications about a lawyer's services must not be false or misleading. That makes a careful fact check part of the writing, not a final legal footnote.
Attorney Biography Check
- State your current role and practice areas in plain words
- Confirm bar admissions, credentials and certification language
- Give dates and context for awards or representative work
- Remove claims that promise a result or create the wrong expectation
- Keep responsible lawyer or firm contact information easy to find
Model Rules Are Only the Starting Point
The ABA Model Rule 7.2 covers specific service communications. The ABA also publishes jurisdiction comparison charts because states may change the model language.
Review the rules that apply to your own jurisdiction before publishing. This checklist helps organize a biography, but it is not legal advice.
Make the Biography Sound Like a Person
Compliance should not flatten the writing. We can keep the facts precise while explaining the choices, experience and point of view that make the attorney worth remembering.
